Observations: |
The ERR inventory only accounts for two paintings stolen from the Loevensohn household in Brussels. However, Claire Loevensohn reported many more cultural losses in the postwar to the Belgian authorities. Furthermore, there are indications that German authorities came twice to her residence, once in May 1941 and the other in December 1943. It is unclear at which visit the bulk of her cultural assets was removed. The ERR participated in one of the visits or selected the two paintings from the lots that were seized by other German agencies. The default date that is used for the thefts is the later one--December 1943--but that can change once more information becomes available, especially regarding M-Aktion removals. Finally, the Loevensohn address is misrepresented in the ERR inventory--Belisare as opposed to Emile van Becelaere. It was located in Watermael-Boitsfort, outside of Brussels, instead of Brussels, as stated in the ERR inventory. |
