Provenance and Comments: Gr. II a. Returned to M.A. for sale. Slated for transport to Nikolsburg on 1 August 1944. However, the train never left Paris. Most objects from the Nikolsburg train of 1 August 1944 were returned to their rightful owners. However, if this painting was restituted to the Arnhold family, there is no date of restitution nor is there an obvious paper trail in the French restitution files. All we do know is that the painting is not mentioned in the Repertoire des biens spolies as missing or lost. Moreover, the French government asked that a painting by Chirico called "Des muses" be removed from their list of objects which were still considered to be missing as of 1948. This painting might be the one belonging to Michel Georges-Michel. Hence, short of conclusive proof that the Chirico painting was returned to the Arnholds, doubts linger about its restitution.
