Title: | Portrait de Mademoiselle Diot [Gabrielle Diot. Pastellportrait einer Dame in Halbfigur.] Frauenbildnis |
Description: | pastel 61 x 44 cm |
Literature: | |
Provenance and Comments: | This pastel was confiscated at Floirac. It went from the German Embassy to the Jeu de Paume in mid-December 1940. The number "22" assigned to it appears to be associated with Maurice de Rothschild property at the time of the transfer of his property to the Jeu de Paume. This pastel circulated through the Paris art market and disappeared until the mid-1970s, when it resurfaced on the German art market. According to an article published in the New York Times on October 31, 2018, Mathias Hans of Hamburg helped broker its sale in 1974 allegedly to a Swiss owner. However, the reappearance of the work was not noted until 1987 when it was spotted in Mr. Hans' catalogue. The work has still not been restituted. |
