The painting was located in the US Zone of Occupation of Germany, transferred to Wiesbaden where it was assigned the number WIE 3165/76, handed over to the JRSO in Nurnberg on 4 July 1951 as heirless Jewish property. Then it was transferred to the Bezalel in Jerusalem. It was eventually returned to Mr. Chapira, which elicited serious recriminations between Mr. Chapira and Mr. Honikman, as well as from Rose Valland who accused Chapira of having misled French and German authorities about the ownership of the painting. |
