Provenance and Comments: | According to French restitution authorities, these studies were executed in the style of Watteau and the attribution remains French school, 18th century. Also, this item is the closest one that fits the description in the inventory provided by Alain and Elie de Rothschild among the works on paper stolen by the Germans and removed to the Jeu de Paume. which fell under the designation 'R' [Rothschild]. The ERR card indicates that the drawing came from "Schloss Chantilly." However, it was removed from a Rothschild residence at 23 Avenue de Marigny, in Paris, home of Alain and Elie de Rothschild. |
