There is sign of extensive damage (vertical laceration and severe "folding") on this painting as photographed in the immediate aftermath of its confiscation. Note the contours of the easel on which the painting was placed as an indicator of the slipshod manner in which the first photographs of confiscated objects was taken, most likely at the Louvre storerooms (séquestre). In other words, the painting was worthless from an art market standpoint which might have justified its "condemnation." |
