(Schloss) Adolphe Schloss-The Schloss collection was assembled with great care by Adolphe Schloss, a German Jew who settled in Paris in the late 19th century. In August 1939, the collection was transferred to a vault at the Chateau de Chambon (Corrèze) for safekeeping. On April 16, 1943, a combination of Nazi policemen and French officials from the CGQJ worked together to confiscate the Schloss collection and transfer it to Paris for processing. There, the collection was split into three parts--the largest going to the Linz Museum project. That part of the collection (262 paintings) was transferred to the Führerbau (Munich) on 24 November 1943 where it remained untouched until 29-30 April 1945 when local Munich citizens broke into the building housing the collection and hundreds of other works and stole everything. Nearly half of the Schloss paintings are still unrestituted. |

The sources clash on the attribution and the titling of this painting which makes one wonder whether it is the same one or two distinct objects. Additional research is required to make that final determination. Meanwhile, the German inventory of the Schloss collection ascribes Schloss 150 to Monogrammist, P, which is described as a Winterlandschaft. The experts from the Munich Collecting Point ascribe this work to Avercamp. |

A list of missing paintings from the Schloss Collection dated 15 February 1945 indicates that this work by Avercamp measured 24 x 52 cm. According to the Munich Central Collecting Point (MCCP) file, this painting by Avercamp was acquired for the Linz Museum, stored at the Führerbau, stolen by unknown individuals, recovered as a result of an investigation by Edgar Breitenbach and sent to the MCCP on 9 October 1946. The painting was sold at Galerie Charpentier in Paris on 25 May 1949. |
