Provenance and Comments: This item was in a crate supplied by the Schenker company and stored at the German Embassy in Paris in the summer of 1940. The ERR staff at the Jeu de Paume made a mistake and misidentified the artist as Picansso from the early 19th century! According to the ERR card, this work by Picasso came from the Paul Rosenberg collection in Paris. The ERR inventory page in B323/287 refers back to the Paul Rosenberg inventory connected with the initial seizures of Jewish-owned collections in Paris in the summer of 1940. Paul Rosenberg's property was listed under Roman numeral VII. The German Embassy inventory lists the gouache as part of Paul Rosenberg's Paris collection. This particular gouache on paper bears the German Embassy desigator of VII, 3. Nevertheless, the item is labeled as belonging to the Seligmann collection under SEL 557. After the war, it was returned to the Seligmann heirs according to the Munich Central Collecting Point (MCCP) files.
