Provenance and Comments: | Tausch 15. Sent by Rochlitz for Goering from Paris to Baden-Baden 19 February 1944. On March 10, 1942 the art dealer Gustav Rochlitz exchanged four ‘degenerate’ paintings by Matisse, Modigliani and Renoir, with a 16th century panel from Florence depicting the Holy Family. The paintings belonged to Paul Rosenberg, Rothschild and Michel Georges-Michel. Jacques Beltrand appraised this work on 11 March 1942. Rochlitz alleged at war's end that he had shipped it to one of his warehouses in Baden-Baden. The painting ended up in the collection of Conrad Doebbeke and was sold with many other items from his collection of so-called "Entartete Kunst" works to the Hannover-based Sprengel Museum in 1949. The restitution took place in February 2024. |
