| Literature: | According to the inventory supplied by the Baron Philippe de Rothschild, this painting was removed from a safe in Arcachon. It could be that it had been then transferred to rue Saint-Florentin. However, that does not appear to be plausible. Hence, we wonder whether or not this is the same painting as the one removed from Arcachon. If it is, the woman depicted in this painting is identified as the Duchesse de Chateauroux. The painting was exhibited in Paris in 1909 at the "Exposition des cent portraits de femmes." | ||||||||
| Provenance and Comments: | This painting was seized in Arcachon in one of two crates deposited by Baron Philippe de Rothschild at the Société Générale d'Arcachon on 1 June 1940. The Vichy government sequestered his property and an initial inventory was taken on 22 November 1940. Thereupon, the German authorities asserted their privilege over the Rothschild property and ordered its removal which occurred on 24 February 1941. Mr. Braumuller of the ERR presided over the transfer of the Rothschild property to Paris. That information contradicts the indication on the ERR card which declares that the painting was removed from the rue Saint-Florentin in Paris. | ||||||||
