Provenance and Comments: This painting was seized at the BNCI in Libourne. Tausch 21. Slated to leave for New York from Bordeaux, this painting was seized shortly after the German occupation of France. It was part of a three-painting exchange on 24 July 1942 between Bruno Lohse and Goering, which included two works by Henri Matisse. This painting by Gauguin was allegedly sent by Rochlitz for Goering from Paris to Baden-Baden in June 1944. It was actually discovered in Paris shortly after war's end and sold by Paul Rosenberg to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York, in 1946 where it still resides.
